Fall Festivities Near Your BYU-I Student Housing

Jenn Handy • October 1, 2024

As autumn settles into Rexburg, college students have a unique opportunity to experience the season’s best activities. With the changing fall colors, approaching holidays, and the refreshing autumn air, it’s the perfect time to step away from campus and dive into local adventures. From exploring pumpkin patches and corn mazes to cozying up with friends for bonfires and cider nights, there's no shortage of ways to make the most of autumn in Rexburg.

Being in college can be stressful, with many responsibilities to balance. However, with the peak of the fall season being so close to midterms, finding ways to get out and enjoy yourself is crucial to living a balanced life.

One of the best aspects of autumn as a student in Rexburg is the convenience of living near many fun activities. With most events and festivities just a short walk or drive away from student housing, it’s easy for students to slip away from studying and experience fun adventures for little to no cost. Whether heading to a nearby pumpkin patch, exploring the haunted attractions, or enjoying a scenic drive, the proximity makes it easy to fit these outings into a busy college schedule.

Make the Most of Fall With Friends

It is no secret that money is tight during your college years. However, you can still have fun and enjoy all that fall has to offer. There are plenty of ways to take advantage of the season with your friends without breaking the bank.

Halloween is the perfect opportunity to participate in activities that only happen once a year. For instance, you could grab some pumpkins and enjoy a night of carving while listening to spooky music. To make the evening even more enjoyable, consider turning it into a friendly competition to carve the most impressive or creative pumpkin.  You could also select a theme for your carvings, encouraging everyone to think outside the box and showcase their unique artistic flair. This shared experience will ignite your creativity, strengthen friendships, and create lasting memories.

If you are into scary movies, you could host a movie night for your friends. Set up a cozy space with snacks, hot cider, and festive decorations to enhance the atmosphere. There are also plenty of other seasonal movie options if horror isn’t your thing.

You might also consider taking a trip to St. Anthony’s Sand Dunes and enjoying a warm bonfire on a chilly fall night. Don't forget to bring blankets and supplies for s’mores to make the evening more fun!

Pumpkin Patches and Corn Mazes

One of the perks of living in Rexburg is that rural land is abundant, allowing plenty of space for fall festivities. For example, corn mazes and pumpkin patches are plentiful and easy to access.

One of the most popular sites is the
Straw Maze, just 15 minutes from the BYU-Idaho campus. Straw bales are piled high in an intricate design, creating a complex maze for guests to work their way through. To add to the fun, check out the games and photo opportunities after making your way out of the maze.

There are also many local pumpkin patches to visit. Whether you're looking to gather pumpkins for decorating your home or seeking the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot, visiting pumpkin patches is a delightful way to embrace the spirit of fall. These charming spots invite you to enjoy the crisp autumn air while exploring rows of vibrant pumpkins, allowing you to unwind and soak up the season.

Haunted Attractions

One of the most distinctive and thrilling activities to embrace during the fall season is visiting the haunted attractions that pop up in and around Rexburg. These immersive experiences offer a chance to embrace the spooky spirit of Halloween while enjoying the vibrant autumn atmosphere.

There are many options to choose from, including:

  • The Haunted Forest: Located at the same complex as the straw maze, this haunted attraction includes a leisurely walk through the woods where haunters wait in the shadows to scare you when you least expect it. Tickets are available for 15 dollars, but if you live at NorthPoint apartments, you can get tickets at a discount on residents' night.
  • The Haunted Mill: Take a tour of a historic flour mill that is said to be haunted by many creatures and spirits. Located 10 miles from the BYU-I campus, this is a great spot to visit with friends.
  • Idaho’s Haunted Hospital: Located about 15 minutes from Rexburg, this is said to be one of the scariest haunted attractions in Eastern Idaho. This attraction includes a walk through the infirmary of an abandoned reformatory school, where you will navigate through a maze full of obstacles and scares.
  • NorthPoint’s Haunted Hallway: Participate in the Halloween fun across the street from campus at NothPoint’s Haunted Hallway. Bring your friends and be prepared to be scared!

Be on the lookout for other frightening events, such as haunted carwashes, local spook alleys, and more.

BYU-I Campus Activites

The start of the fall semester at the university brings many students to Rexburg not only for academics but also for fun. BYU-Idaho is becoming known for its student activities throughout the semester that allow students to meet new people, make priceless memories, and enjoy their time at school.

One such event is the
BYU-Idaho Spirit Week. Enjoy activities such as a light parade, campus devotionals, service projects, cultural showcases, and a color run a few weeks into the semester. This is a great way to get out and explore all the campus offers.

This semester, the campus is hosting its first-ever
Spooktacular to provide students with festive fun, including dancing, a costume competition, spook alley, laser tag, and more.

Fall Hiking and Scenic Drives

Being outdoors during fall cannot be beaten. The changing leaves and relief from the summer heat make this the perfect time to see the beauty of Eastern Idaho and go for a scenic hike. There are many hikes near Rexburg from which to choose.

A couple of popular hikes are:

  • Cress Creek Nature Trail: An easy hike located 25 minutes from Rexburg through rolling hills
  • Darby Canyon Wind Cave Trails: A moderate/difficult hike located one hour from Rexburg through the mountains

If you or your friends have a car, going for a scenic drive is also an option. Eastern Idaho can be a very picturesque place because of its varied landscapes. Drive through the rolling farmlands to see beautiful wheat fields. You can also venture further and head towards Teton to see the striking mountains or even into Yellowstone National Park to experience a myriad of fall colors firsthand.

University life can feel like it's moving at a million miles per hour once classes start and you build a social life, start working, and take on other responsibilities. However, building good habits early on can help reduce the overwhelm college life can bring. Following are tips on organization, time management, creating routines, and more to support getting things accomplished day to day and succeeding in academics. Approaching Academics The best time to get organized is the start of the semester. Once assignments and exams start coming up, schedules can get really busy very quickly. This makes having a plan from the beginning an important element of academic success. One of the best ways to support academics is by creating a semester roadmap. Mark important dates, such as exam and assignment deadlines, and major projects. This will help you see the time you have to work with. Add in any work commitments you might have or times when you might need to reduce working hours or take time off, so you can make arrangements in advance. Also, identify academic resources on campus. There are support services in different forms to help students. Helpful resources you can look into are: Tutoring center offerings Writing and math center support Librarian knowledge and library databases for research projects Academic advisors for help with course planning Don't overlook the impact of connecting with available resources, and don't just ask for help when you're struggling. Connecting with your instructors can also make a difference. Here are some ideas: Use office hours early in the semester to ask questions or build relationships If you're confused about an assignment, bring the instructions to an office visit, having highlighted exactly what you're struggling with Review graded work and ask for tips on how to improve moving forward Include the course name and section in email subject lines Email ahead of time if you have to miss a class to ask for notes or materials Lastly, try to be as positive as you can about your classes and the semester. Not every class will be easy; it's not meant to be. But being positive about your academic experience can help make things easier. Cultivating Good Study Habits You may need to try a few approaches when it comes to cultivating good study habits to find what works for you. For some, it's reviewing their notes within a few hours of class while everything is still fresh. Others may prefer explaining difficult concepts to a classmate to help them work things out loud. Or, working with small study groups may be more preferable to others. A few more techniques you might want to try include: Creating flashcards for terminology-heavy classes like biology or language courses Practicing sample problems, not just rereading notes, might be helpful for subjects like chemistry or math Aim for short, focused study sections on specific areas or topics, not long, uninterrupted ones Good study habits can be applied to completing large assignments, too. Find a way to complete them that works for you. One option is to break them into smaller steps. For a research paper, this might look like: Choosing a topic Gathering resources Outlining main points Writing the first draft Revizing Editing Submitting Spacing the workload out over several days or weeks may help reduce overwhelm. If you ever feel stuck, remember that campus resources are available to help you out. Managing Time Time management may be one of the biggest challenges for university students. One strategy you may want to try out here is time blocking, where you schedule specific blocks of time for one thing only, i.e., studying, working, completing assignments, or reviewing notes. You may also want to implement planners or digital tools to help stay on top of your schedule and reduce procrastination. Options include: Using a phone calendar to track assignment deadlines Setting reminders in apps for upcoming tasks Using weekly planners to map out schedules Using Simple Study Techniques Pairing time management with simple study techniques can be massively beneficial, too. Consider these ideas: Study in a quiet, distraction-free environment Set small goals for each study session Turn off phone notifications during study periods Work with a study partner for accountability Supporting Well‑Being Your physical and mental health play a huge part in academic success. Remember to make healthcare decisions that align with your individual circumstances. Ideas for supporting well-being include: Maintaining a consistent sleeping routine : Sleep can boost concentration, memory, and focus. Eating nutritious foods to support your body : Regular, healthy meals are important to overall health. Remaining adequately hydrated : Good hydration supports a healthy lifestyle. Drink frequently throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Managing stress : Identify stress-managing activities that work for you, like going for walks, practicing mindfulness, or taking study breaks. Remember that campus services are available to support overall well-being. Establishing an Academic-Friendly Environment Consider the impact your living environment can have on your academic success. Creating a dedicated study space in your apartment is one way you can help your residence function as an effective place for academic success. A productive study set up might look like: A desk with space for books and a laptop Good lighting to reduce eye strain Organization for supplies, supplies and course materials Comfortable, supportive seating Try to keep your study area away from where you relax to create defined spaces. You may also want to coordinate with roommates so you're all on the same page regarding study times, schedules, and quiet hours so everyone gets a comfortable space and a productive living environment to support studies .
